I am considering painting my Packard the factory color, (Black) and I am wondering what is better to paint with. A newer laquer or the old non-acrylic kind. Can you tell me what you think about these options in terms of cost, how to work with and availability.
Thanks

Regarding paint: The "modern" lacquers are "acrylic lacquer" which is readily available (but expensive) through most good commercial automotive paint suppliers. Ditzler "Duracryl" is one brand. The old style nitrocellulose lacquers are difficult to find but available through Bill Hirsch (www.hirschauto.com). I am currently restoring a 1940 120 Club Coupe and my old-style painter is using nitrocellulose. He is a private, home-based shop. Most commercial painters refuse to paint with nitrocellulose because of the volatility and environmental/health issues. But, there is nothing like old-style lacquer for depth of finish and ease of repair when needed. _________________ David Charvet
